As you may already know if you’ve been following my blog, my family took a recent trip to Georgia. We passed through Atlanta, enough to see the epic skyline but not much else. Most of our time we spent in Athens and the surrounding area.
One of my favorite parts about the trip was the food! We ate at different places every day of our trip, investigating local favorites and exploring the flavor of the area. Our first day led us to the Boar’s Head Lounge, a hole in the wall bar, but it had a great upper deck to enjoy the beautiful evening air.
Our next day led us to a few more adventurous choices. Catch 22 was a wonderful little gastropub, some distance from campus but definitely worth the drive. Food arrived heaped in huge portions on artists’ pallets and the entire place smelled of slow smoked southern barbecue.
We also stopped in at the Trappeze Pub, a cute little place with uncomfortable seating but great food. I got to try a drink called Cheerwine, which reminded me of an old fashioned cherry soda. Yum!
As most of my family and friends will know, I have quite a bit of a sweet tooth. Ice cream was an absolute necessity to recover after our four mile walk through campus in 100 degree weather, but that wasn’t where it ended. Pauley’s had amazing crepes. I tried the smores crepe which consisted of Nutella, marshmallows, and graham cracker wrapped in a perfectly folded crepe and topped with ice cream.
But overall my favorite place to visit, we actually stopped twice, was a place called Zombie Coffee. The coffee was perfect and the entire place smelled like fresh baked doughnuts. We tried the maple glazed bacon doughnut. It was one of the most wonderful pastries I have ever had the joy of ingesting! We spent a couple hours there reading, drawing and writing by the huge front windows. If you’re ever in the area, I would highly recommend a visit.

Ah, Cheerwine! Haha, they have that in a lot of restaurants here. I only like it out of the fountain, because the kind that’s at the store isn’t carbonated enough and tastes flat. Cook-Out serves Cheerwine and vanilla ice cream floats which are super yummy.
I never knew Athens was this cute though. It’s about 4 hours from me. Granted, it has a lot in common with Charleston, so I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to visit. But I’m glad someone else is seeing the charm of the South 🙂

Hah! I’d never even heard of it before, but I’m from Wisconsin…. The float version sounds amazing 🙂
Athens downtown was super cute, but I think Zombie Coffee alone would be enough to bring me back!
