This post is a little late, but over our long Labor Day weekend, my husband and I decided to finally turn one room in our house into our official library. We’ve been talking about it since we moved in, but since it wasn’t necessary maintenance, it kept getting pushed to the side by more pressing issues (windows, appliances, furnace…).
But now the shelves are up! And I couldn’t be happier 🙂
We started with sets of pre-built cabinets, purchased from a local home improvement store. My husband built the bases out of two-by-fours and cut the counters from thick pine boarding. We constructed the shelves separately outside, painted everything with two coats of interior semi-gloss paint, and let it sit overnight. Then it was just a matter of cutting back the carpet, anchoring the bases, and screwing it all together. We put a final coat of lacquer on the counter for additional protection and called it a day!
All together, we figure we put about 30 hours into the project and it was entirely worth it. Next, we’ll be constructing a bench seat for beneath the window and eventually we hope to add shelves above the window as well.
As you can see, we’re already well on our way to filling the shelves. I’ll post more pictures once we have the bench seat complete 🙂 Now we just need to find one of those awesome metal ladders…
