It’s impossible to visit Louisville, Kentucky and not notice the city’s dedication to horse racing. From the numerous statues scattered around the city to the racing related artwork and comments on billboards and building fronts, you can obviously see that people take pride in this prestigious derby sport.
Churchill Downs is home to the Kentucky Derby. We were lucky enough to visit Louisville in time for Downs after Dark, a wonderful opportunity to visit the Downs with fewer crowds but just as much excitement.
The grounds itself is beautiful, with wonderful statues, impressive buildings, and lovely garden spaces. There are plenty of places to eat inside and a concert space outside if you’d like a break from the racing.
If you get a chance to visit, make sure to dress your best and don’t forget your bow tie or fancy hat! We felt a little out of place in our regular street clothes, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying some mint juleps 🙂
And best of all, after the sun has gone down, everyone gets to enjoy all of the beautiful lights 🙂
