Port Washington in the Fog

Port Washington is a small Wisconsin town with a population of around 11,000 people, located on the shores of Lake Michigan. This is a favorite weekend destination for my husband and me, meaning I have plenty to say about the area. You can click here to check out my last post about this adorable Wisconsin community.

But behind the local galleries and cute coffee shops, there’s an eerie side to such port communities. Lake Michigan is the second largest of the Great Lakes by volume and the 5th largest lake in the world. With so much open water and the tempestuous weather of the Midwest, Lake Michigan is home to plenty of ship wrecks and ghost stories.

Out on the main pier in the early morning hours, surrounded by rolling fog, one almost expects to see ghost ships sailing through the mists…
